I was very pleased to find out
that the winner of this year’s Vauxhall Fashion Scout award is Phoebe English.
With a judging panel including the likes of Kate Moss, Katy England, Marios Schwab and
Susie Lau, there is no doubt that the Merit Award will set the career of the talented
Central St Martin’s graduate into the right path.
Lucky enough to be attending the show,I
was amazed by the way different materials have been manipulated and
engineered to form sculptural surfaces which are structural, flat and decorative at the same time. The whole
collection is about contrast: rubber fringes are weaved into caged structures for the body, translucent latex dresses and industrial felted knitwear are overlayered
to create theatrical silhouettes.
Bravely
moving away from the comfort zone of the neutral colour palette dominating her
previous collections, in the A/W 12 Phoebe English surprises with a vibrant
pink that definitely stands out like a bright flash next to the textured black of
her box-like yet very feminine creations.
